3 Generations of Sarod Feat.
Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Amaan Ali Bangash, Ayaan Ali Bangash, Abeer & Zohaan.
The story of the Three Generations of Sarod is a beautiful saga of tradition, innovation, and legacy in Indian classical music, led by one of its most distinguished families — the Bangash lineage of the Senia Bangash Gharana.
At the heart of this musical journey is Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, a maestro who has redefined the art of Sarod playing. Born in 1945 into a family steeped in music, his father, Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan, was a revered court musician in Gwalior and a master of the Sarod. Amjad Ali Khan inherited not only the instrument but the spirit of deep devotion to music. Over the decades, he crafted his own unique style — one that sings, emotes, and transcends the boundaries of tradition while staying rooted in the classical core. His contributions have earned him honors like the Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Shri.
Carrying forward this luminous legacy are his two sons, Amaan Ali Bangash and Ayaan Ali Bangash, both of whom have trained under the loving yet rigorous guidance of their father. Amaan, the elder, and Ayaan, the younger, have both established themselves as modern-day Sarod exponents, blending classical purity with contemporary appeal. Their performances showcase both technical brilliance and emotional depth, and they’ve collaborated across diverse genres globally, introducing the Sarod to newer audiences and modern platforms.
Now the legacy continues into its third generation with Abeer Ali Bangash and Zohaan Ali Bangash — the young sons of Ayaan Ali Bangash. Though still early in their musical journeys, both Abeer and Zohaan have already begun learning the Sarod under the watchful eyes of their father, uncle, and grandfather. Their occasional stage appearances during family concerts symbolize not just lineage but the enduring spirit of Indian classical music passed from generation to generation.
This remarkable lineage — from Ustad Amjad Ali Khan to Amaan and Ayaan Ali Bangash, and now to Abeer and Zohaan — represents more than just musical inheritance. It is a living tradition of sound, soul, and shared wisdom, where each generation brings its own voice to an ancient art, while honoring the timeless essence of the Sarod.
